The 442nd, 1944, Densho Encyclopedia
We had to prove we were loyal, We had to prove we would fight
-Shigero Tsubota, former 100th Battalion soldier
Alongside the 100th, the 442nd took a stand as they marched up the Italian peninsula, overtaking the enemy cities of Belvedere, Luciana, and Livorno. Crossing the Arno River in August of 1944, the 442nd traveled to France and attacked the Vosges Mountains. There, they would be assigned to rescue the men of the Texan Battalion.

“And I wanted to be able to demonstrate, not only to my government, but to my neighbors that I was a good American.” "When you see an enemy, you fire... Well, it just got to the point where you got to shoot first before they shoot you... You don't even think about anything else, just get him." |
"But when they were sent to Italy for combat, the 100th Infantry Battalion, they had already been there for nine months, fighting up the southern portion of ‘the boot’ to the northern portion... The 100th Infantry Battalion merged into the 442nd and they became part of the 442nd. After the combat in Italy, they migrated to France and there they fought in France. The combat they were involved in, one to rescue to the Texan Battalion, a group that was captured by the Germans." |
